A Look Back
The history of Toronto is an exciting combination of exploration and natural splendour.
Inspired by the Mohawk term “tkaronto” (place where trees stand in the water), 1687 was the year in which Louis Armand, a French soldier and writer, named what we know call Lake Simcoe “Lake Taronto.”
After going through various permutations, the term Toronto finally came to replace the name of the City of York in 1834. From that point, historians have also suggested that Toronto was inspired by the Huron word for “place of meetings” or “land of plenty.”
I’ve lived in Toronto my entire life. Growing up in Forest Hill – right in the heart of Midtown – I can help you with a better look around. If you look below, you’ll find a selection of areas, each with their own unique history, quirks, and amenities.
